We rely on the big toe joint for every step we take. Just like the hip, knee, and ankle, the big toe joint is prone to arthritis causing pain and inability to move the toe.

In severe cases where bracing, orthotics, and injections do not satisfy the patient Dr. Blanken offers arthrodesis, or fusion of the joint. This procedure, indicated for painful arthritis of the joint allows for restoration of activity with pain resolution. Addressment of big toe joint arthritis with fusion is a tried and true method to allow patients to regain activity with a durable solution. Dr. Blanken will take out the arthritic joint surfaces and use plates and screws to seal the joint and eliminate motion.

One can argue the case for joint replacement instead of fusion, but a joint replacement hasn't demonstrated sustainable long term outcomes nor restoration of function. Complications from joint replacement surgery are devastating and potentially limb threatening.
