MINIMALLY INVASIVE BUNION SURGERY

In mild to moderate deformities, correction can be achieved minimally invasively or through tiny poke incisions in the skin to install hardware to correct and maintain the foot position. This approach is groundbreaking in that it achieves a seamless correction that also allows for quicker return to walking compared to traditional open techniques. Through small stabs, the bone is cut and moved with a saw to remove the bump and to narrow the foot. Finally, by either a metal plate or long screws, the position of the foot is maintained.

BUNION SURGERY (LAPIPLASTY)

What Is Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction®?

Bunions are more than just a bump on the big toe. There are more than 100 procedures to address it. Up until the last decade, there has been little advancement in bunion correction innovation. Today, we understand that a big toe bump is a multifaceted deformity and surgery should address every aspect of it. Through a thorough exam where the foot is radiographed, the surgeon completes a hands-on biomechanical exam, and the patient's goals are communicated, the appropriate surgical plan can be executed.

In more severe cases, correction is achieved through a small 3-4 centimeter incision. Mulltiplanar correction is achieved by cutting the joint surfaces, application of a jig to dial in precise correction and straightening of the foot, followed by installation of low profile plates and/or staples to secure the foot in a corrected position. This procedure was originally described by Paul Lapidus almost 100 years ago, and is commonly called the Lapiplasty procedure. Not all Lapidus procedures are a Lapiplasty, but every Lapiplasty is a Lapidus. Lapiplasty is specific to the hardware manufacturer, the Lapidus is a technique to correct a bunion deformity with a fusion procedure. This procedure affords great correction with potential to return to walking sooner than traditional methods. No bunion is the same, and every patient has a unique goal in mind. Dr. Blanken will communicate and execute the surgical plan to best meet your goals so you are as informed and as comfortable as possible.
