TENDON INJURY - TENDINITIS
Tendinitis is the inflammation of a tendon, the fibrous tissue connecting muscle to bone, often resulting from overuse or injury. This condition causes pain, swelling, and limited movement. Three common types of tendinitis affecting the foot and ankle are posterior tibial tendinitis, Achilles tendinitis, and peroneal tendinitis.
Posterior tibial tendinitis - involves the posterior tibial tendon, which runs along the inside of the ankle and supports the arch of the foot. Inflammation here can lead to pain along the inside of the ankle and foot, often exacerbated by physical activity. If untreated, it can result in a fallen arch or flatfoot deformity.
Achilles tendinitis - affects the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body, connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. This condition is common among runners and athletes who engage in intense physical activities. Symptoms include pain and stiffness along the back of the heel, especially in the morning or after exercise. Chronic Achilles tendinitis can increase the risk of tendon rupture, a severe injury requiring surgical repair.
Peroneal tendinitis - involves the peroneal tendons, which run along the outer side of the ankle. These tendons help stabilize the foot and ankle and facilitate movement. Inflammation here causes pain along the outer ankle and may worsen with prolonged standing or walking. This condition is often seen in individuals with high arches or those who participate in activities requiring repetitive ankle motion.
TREATMENT FOR TENDINITIS
Treatment for tendinitis typically involves rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy to strengthen the affected area. Severe cases may require immobilization or surgical intervention to repair the damaged tendons. Proper footwear and gradual increases in physical activity can help prevent tendinitis and ensure long-term foot and ankle health.
