FOOT & ANKLE RECONSTRUCTION
Foot and ankle reconstruction is a specialized surgical field focused on restoring function and alleviating pain in the foot and ankle. This type of surgery addresses various conditions, including deformities, injuries, and chronic issues that impair mobility and quality of life.
FLAT FEET - Flat feet, also known as pes planus, is a common condition where the arches of the feet collapse, causing the entire sole to come into contact with the ground. This can lead to pain and discomfort in the feet, ankles, and lower legs due to the lack of proper arch support, which strains muscles and ligaments. Over time, flat feet can contribute to issues such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and knee pain.
HIGH ARCH FEET - Conversely, high arch feet, or pes cavus, present an opposite problem. The arches of the feet are overly raised, which can lead to instability and uneven weight distribution. People with high arches often experience pain due to increased pressure on the ball and heel of the foot, making them susceptible to conditions like metatarsalgia, hammertoes, and stress fractures.
Reconstruction surgery aims to correct these deformities by realigning bones, repairing tendons and ligaments, and sometimes fusing joints to enhance stability and function. This surgery not only alleviates pain but also improves mobility and overall quality of life for individuals suffering from foot and ankle issues.

FLAT FOOT RECONSTRUCTION
WITHOUT PLATING & METAL
Flatfoot Repair with Arthrex® InternalBrace™ Augmentation
Flat foot deformity, often described as Posterior TIbial Tendon Dysfunction is a deformity due to insufficiency of a tendon from our left that inserts on the inside portion of the foot. With this damage, the foot often splays out and has a duck foot like appearance. This compensation presents with pain about the arch and apprehension with activity due to aching of the foot or inability to wear specific performance footwear. If this foot is flexible in nature, it can be addressed surgically without the need for plates, screws, or cuts of the bone. With suture material and anchor technology, the soft tissue attachments that create our foot arch can be restored and augmented. Through a small incision, the damaged tendon is debrided and advanced, and the underlying ligaments (bone to bone attachments) are augmented with ultrastrong suture material. This approach is reserved for specific presentations, but can ultimately prevent the need for larger reconstruction of the foot.
Return to pre-injury activity with this surgical technique is the goal. Arch pain should not stop anyone from an active lifestyle, see Dr. Blanken immediately for consultation to see if this treatment is appropriate for you.
